Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur

Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur

Provence is a region famous for its intensity of colours ever changing depending on the brightness of the glorious sun. Along the coast the emerald green and azure blue waters sparkle like priceless gems. Further inland, roofs of terracotta and ochre warm the countryside with their cindery glow. Uniform rows of lavender create a pool of parallel purples. Its no wonder the landscape has inspired artists and writers from Van Gogh to Scott Fitzgerald. Peppers, garlic and olives thrive in the warm sunlight and adorn the traditional fresh fish dishes that are typical of Provencal cuisine.

Marseille is France’s largest port and having links with the Middle East and North Africa it is exotic, cosmopolitan and vibrant.

The dramatic and spectacular Gorges du Verdon slice their way through the limestone plateau halfway between Avignon and Nice. The green River Verdon flows between this deeply cut canyon and plays host to a number of water activities such as canoeing and kayaking.

A visit to Provence would not be complete without a visit to the sparsely populated wetlands of the Camargue. Marvel at the huge flocks of pink flamingos that nest here in the spring and summer.

Along the Cote d’Azur, stop off at the chic locations of the rich and famous. People watch at pavement cafes, soaking up the sun at St Tropez, Cannes and Nice. Take a day trip to the tiny principality of Monaco and admire the Grimaldi’s palatial home.
