Lorraine

Lorraine

Lorraine is a region with a landscape of prairies and forests, although it is probably better known for its culinary association with the popular quiche Lorraine.

The area’s historical capital, Nancy, has a refined feel to it with its elegant squares and fine museums. It was also a forerunner of the Art Nouveau movement in France, spearheaded by Emile Galle, the glassmaker, who founded the Ecole de Nancy. Examples of his work along with other local artists can be found at the Musee des Beaux-Arts and the Musee de l’Ecole de Nancy. Many of the entrances to offices, private homes and shops have the distinctive stained-glass windows and grillwork that is indicative of the unique architecture and decorative arts that can be admired in the town.

Sitting at the confluence of the Moselle and the Seille is the city of Metz with its twenty bridges crossing the rivers and canals. Metz is proud of its glorious Gothic Cathedrale St-Etienne, which is set on a hill above the Moselle. Built between 1220 and 1522, it is famed for its stained glass windows. The cathedral also makes a superb spectacle when it is beautifully illuminated at night.
