Limousin
Limousin, set in the very heart of France, is one of the less discovered regions in France. With its sleepy villages and rolling countryside it is one of the least densely populated areas in France. The main attraction of Limousin is its lush green landscape of hills, rivers and woodlands, dotted with old churches and castles. As a result of the many rivers that flow through the region combined with the numerous springs and lakes, outdoor pursuits such as sailing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing are very popular.
Limoges, the historic capital of Limousin has long been recognised for its excellence in the production of enamelware and fine porcelain. As a result of this many of the city’s museums and galleries are dedicated to these arts and crafts.
South of Limoges is the impressive town of Uzerche with its grey slate roofs, turrets and belltowers, standing proudly on the hill above the Vezere river. Beyond Uzerche the river cascades through the green Saillant Gorges. Set in some of the most spectacular scenery in Limousin is the delightful flower filled village of Gimel-les-Cascades. Here, a trio of waterfalls can be found and marvelled at as they plummet 143 metres down into the gorge below.
