Franche-Comte
The region of Franche-Comte provides all the ingredients required for exceptional opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. All along the Vallee du Doubs cascading waterfalls can be found in this land of glorious grottoes and glistening lakes. Canoeing and kayaking are extremely popular in the area and make an excellent mode of transport for exploring the natural beauty of the landscape.
The Jura Mountains stretch along the Franco-Swiss border and form part of the historic Franche-Comte region. It has the advantage of being a less explored mountainous area and offers some of France’s premier cross-country skiing. It also has superb hiking and nature trails through wooded hills where walkers enjoy a real taste of traditional mountain life.
The capital of Franche-Comte is Besancon, which is surrounded by hills and situated in the northern region of the Jura range. The stately architecture of the old town with its elegant wrought-iron work is a reminder of its 17th century heritage.
