Champagne-Ardenne
Champagne is mainly an agricultural area that has become renowned for its famous sparkling wines. French law states that only wine in certain designated areas that has been matured and bottled according to the strictest standards can be ultimately labelled as Champagne.
A sign-posted route ‘touristique du Champagne’ winds its way through a variety of vineyards heading south towards an area of oak forests, meadows and streams. An excellent place for a wine tasting is the town of Epernay, south of Reims where tours are arranged for visitors to the region. North of Reims, the Ardennes canal can be explored at a leisurely pace aboard a barge or pleasure boat.
The city of Reims, since the 11th century has been the city of coronations. All the kings of France have been crowned in its Gothic Cathedrale Notre Dame. Porte Mars, a triumphal Augustan arch is a reminder of Reims Roman history.
The delightful city of Troyes boasts majestic Gothic churches and 16th century courtyards. The city is also famous for its stained glass, sausages and knitwear.
