Brittany

Brittany

This seafaring region of France displays an independent air as it stands slightly aloof from the rest of France. An enchanting feature of the area is the sense of pride displayed for its Celtic culture planted in Brittany 1500 years ago. Bretons nurture and cherish their past and this can be felt in the upholding of ancient traditions such as the wearing of traditional costumes and playing musical instruments like the biniou and bombarde.

In the east of Brittany are the cities of Rennes, Dinan and Vannes. Rennes is the regional capital and is strategically situated at the meeting place of the rivers Vilaine and Ille. Dinan is set on a hill and this walled medieval city has many beautiful 15th century half-timbered houses. Vannes has a delightful old town, which centres on the Gothic wonder of Cathedrale St-Pierre which is surrounded by a maze of narrow alleyways.

Brittany’s seaside resorts offer some of the best yachting, windsurfing, sea-kayaking and coastal hiking in France. Culinary delights in the area include mussels, oysters, lobster and sea bass.
