Aquitaine

This beautiful stretch of Atlantic coastline reaches south from Bordeaux to the Basque country. With its thriving ports, wines and brandy that are the envy of the world combined with lush countryside, it is no wonder there is something to offer everyone. Chateaux, each with their own distinctive features, characterise the wine districts around Bordeaux and vineyards adorn the hills between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. Bordeaux is a city with a rich, cultural lifestyle as it has been a major port since pre-Roman times.

Famous for its natural beauty, the Bassin d’Arcachon provides a sanctuary for birds and the lagoon is perfect for holidaymakers and sailing enthusiasts. The vast Dune du Pilat at 3km long and 500m wide is the largest sand dune in Europe. Further inland are the copious pine trees of the Landes forest which was man-made to make use of an area of sand and marshes.

The stylish coastal town of Biarritz is known for its excellent surfing. With its rolling Atlantic breakers, the 4km stretch of Anglet beach ranks as one of Europe’s most superior surfing venues. Situated in the central Pyrenees is the lively town of Pau with its elegant Belle Epoque architecture and shady, flower-filled parks.
