Alsace
Alsace is a beautiful and peaceful region dotted with pastel-painted villages and sleepy vineyards. It is nestled between the River Rhine and the Vosges Mountains and has become well known as a land of storks’ nests and half timbered houses bedecked with geraniums. The area abounds with castles from the pastiche folly of Haut-Koenigsbourg to Saverne’s ruined fortress.
A vast selection of outdoor activities are offered in the region including hiking, mountain biking and providing there is enough snowfall, skiing.
The cosmopolitan city of Strasbourg is the capital city of Alsace and has long been known as the crossroads of Europe. A delightful way of admiring the city sights is to take a boat trip along the waterways that encircle the old town.
For wine lovers and enthusiasts an interesting tour is to follow the Alsace Route du Vin. This scenic wine route meanders its way through cobbled streets taking in timber-framed houses and Renaissance fountains.
An extremely popular attraction in the Alsace region well worth a visit is the Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg. Although this castle was destroyed on several occasions at the end of the 19th century, Kaiser Wilhelm II commissioned Berlin architect Bodo Ebhardt to restore the castle. Spectacular scenery of the Rhineland, the Black Forest and the Alps can be seen from the battlements.
