Vendee and Charentes

Vendee and Charentes

The region of Vendee and Charentes combines immense sandy beaches, marshland wilderness and lush green countryside. The landscape stretches inland with the shaded canals of the Venise Vert to the East of Niort and Cognac vineyards in the south. There are towns situated in this area of great historical importance where in medieval times strong defence was essential.

The Charente River meanders past the fortified hilltop city of Angouleme winding its way through Cognac country, completing its journey to the Atlantic at Rochefort. This neat 17th century fortress town is just south of another enchanting coastal city, La Rochelle, which plays host to big film and music festivals in the summer.

Popular attractions in the region include surfing at some of the finest stretches of beaches in France. Enjoy stunning scenery on tranquil boat trips along the Charente River or for the history enthusiasts step back in time and experience the exciting spectacle of medieval re-enactments at Parc Puy du Fou near Nantes.
