Toulouse

Toulouse

Toulouse is a lively, friendly city with a flourishing economy that has been boosted by its expanding aerospace industry. As Toulouse has a large student population it is a bustling and energetic venue with a superb café and bar scene, coupled with numerous affordable places to eat. The city is best explored on foot and as you amble along the narrow medieval streets you can marvel at the many churches and cathedrals you encounter en route. In the old Town many of the buildings were constructed using a rose red brick, which led to the city’s nickname of ‘la Ville Rose’. During the course of the day due to light changes, the colours of the buildings shift from dusky pink at dawn, ruby red at noon to a magical mauve at dusk.

Also in the Old Quarter of the city is the Place de la Daurade, which banks the River Garonne. It is the city’s own beach and it affords a location for peace and relaxation by day or a romantic walk by night as it overlooks the floodlit Pont Neuf.

As Toulouse has a network of canal side paths, activities including walking, running and cycling are enjoyed along these peaceful routes. Boat trips on the tranquil waterway of the Canal du Midi as it winds its way through vineyards and sleepy villages is a favoured day trip for the family.
