Strasbourg
Strasbourg appropriately translates from German to city of roads and has been the crossroads where culture and ideas have been exchanged for many years. It is one of France’s most attractive cities and is positioned on the Grand Ile afloat in the River Ill with its enchanting winding alleys for pedestrian use only. Restaurants, winstubs and pubs are plentiful in this lively old city and are set against the backdrop of the magnificent cathedral, made from pink sandstone. Winstubs, literally translated as wine rooms, are traditionally renowned for their warm and homely atmosphere.
Strasbourg has an impressive selection of museums, all of which have free admission on the first Sunday of the month. A visit is also recommended to the delightful quarter of the city known as Petite France where traditional half-timbered houses are beautifully bedecked with flowers of gold and crimson.
Strasbourg is situated a few kilometres west of the Rhine and has provided vital transport links between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean since Celtic times. Hiking, cycling and snow-shoeing are popular activities in the area around Strasbourg.
