Dijon

Dijon, the capital of Burgundy is renowned for its architectural resplendence, rich cultural life and thriving university. Most of Dijon’s illustrious art collection can be found in the Musee des Beaux Arts, which is housed in the Palais des Ducs. Another notable building in the centre of Dijon is the magnificent 13th century Gothic church, Notre Dame. The facades three levels are decorated with ogling gargoyles separated by two rows of columns. Eglise St-Michel began as a Gothic design but subsequently was adorned with a rich, ornamental Rennaissance façade making it one of the most impressive churches in France.

Dijon has several excellent exhibitions and with a Dijon card, 1/2/3 day-€8/11/14, which can be purchased from the city’s tourist offices, you can gain entrance to the main museums. Also included in the price is a guided city tour and use of public transport. One museum not to be missed is the Musee de Moutarde, where visitors can pay their respects to the city’s most famous export, Dijon mustard.

Walking tours are a first class way of exploring the sights of Dijon and a delightful street to amble your way along is the Rue Verrerie, a cobbled walkway through the old merchant’s quarter, lined with rows of medieval half-timbered houses, some decorated with fine wood carvings.
