French Cities
The diversity of France can also be found in the architecture and culture of its main cities. Paris, the capital of France, is one of the most sophisticated, romantic and exciting cities in the world with many superb tourist attractions, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysees being a few of many and it also makes a good base for family visits to Disneyland Resort Paris. In the north east of France Strasbourg has a distinct German influence with its half-timbered houses bedecked with flowers.
In the south east Grenoble offers a location benefiting from stunning Alpine scenery making a convenient base for skiing, hiking and walking. Lyon, positioned on the banks of the Rhone and Saone rivers is an essential gateway between north and south. In the south of France the beaches of Nice provide an array of water sports such as sailing, jet skiing, water skiing and paragliding. In contrast, the bustling cosmopolitan port of Marseille has always been a cultural melting pot.
In the south west of France the resort of Biarritz, situated between the Pyrenees and the Atlantic coast offers wide sandy beaches lapped by milk-capped rolling waves perfect for invigorating surfing. Further up the west coast the illustrious city of Bordeaux is at the heart of vineyards producing some of the finest wines in the world.
Also on the west coast of France is the delightful old harbour of La Rochelle with restaurants and cafes lining the pedestrians-only medieval streets. Travel inland eastwards and visit Limoges to admire the pure white porcelain synonymous to the city and a major industry. In the north of France are the lively ports of Calais and Cherbourg offering easy access from the United Kingdom.
